Has Your Apple ID Been Terminated?

There are over 2 billion active Apple devices in use throughout the world, each one of them requiring an Apple ID to purchase and download content, such as games, apps, or media. Apple IDs are also necessary to purchase additional device or cloud storage, access the App Store, and access many additional Apple services like iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Music, and many more.

We are investigating whether Apple may be engaging in an unlawful practice when it terminates Apple IDs, blocking access to purchased apps, media, and cloud storage for Apple users. Apple may also be unjustly enriching itself as users whose Apple IDs were terminated now may need to purchase additional storage, or re-purchase apps or other content they had previously purchased with the terminated Apple ID.

Apple IDs are valuable; the Apple ID provides users access to the Apple ecosystem, including all of Apple’s services like iCloud, Apple TV, or the App Store, and allows access to  much of your data across different Apple devices by utilizing iCloud features.

So what do consumers risk when their Apple ID is terminated? Potentially EVERYTHING! Losing your Apple ID doesn’t just mean you lose access to many of Apple’s features. For many, the termination of your Apple ID also means losing access to your iCloud storage and its data, as well as apps, movies, music, games, and other purchases made through your Apple ID.

What Are We Doing?

An Apple consumer, William Cowley,  recently  filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of California that seeks restitution for lost content and aims to stop Apple from engaging in these allegedly unfair and unlawful business practices and violations of law. If you would like to review the filed complaint click here.

Mr. Cowley’s attorneys are investigating claims against Apple for the unlawful actions it may be taking when terminating Apple IDs, restricting user access to valuable data and purchased content without proper and timely notice, warning, or just reason.

Class and Claimant Experiences

Across the internet, consumers have reported or issued complaints about their Apple IDs being disabled or terminated without warning or reason. Check out these examples (some edited for length):

"I woke up to a notification on my iPhone 14 telling me that I needed to sign in to my Apple ID to continue using their services. I entered in the password, and was told that it was incorrect, I go to hit Forgot my Password only to be told This Apple ID is not active. Confused, I go onto Apple's iForgot website that is supposed to help with locked accounts, and upon hitting reset password on that website, I was given the message This Apple ID has been locked for security reasons. I called Apple and some guy on the phone told me that I needed to create a new Apple ID, and all he sent me was a link to the legal TOS. I was transferred to a representative who was from the Engineering department I think, and he told me in a very confronting tone that I somehow breached their TOS, and would not tell me what it was in the TOS that I violated. I read through the TOS and can say for certain that I have not gone against their TOS in any way at any point during my use of my Apple ID account."
